Choosing a Preschool or Daycare for Autism

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

The right early-childhood program can make a world of difference. Here’s what to look for when choosing a preschool or daycare for your autistic child.

What to look for

Consider the staff’s experience with autism and openness to learning, the ratio of adults to children, the sensory environment (noise, lighting, space to take breaks), the structure and predictability of the day, and willingness to communicate and collaborate with you and outside providers. A warm, flexible program that sees your child as an individual matters more than any label.

Questions to ask

Ask how they handle transitions and big feelings, whether they’ll work with your child’s ABA team (with your consent), how they include children of all abilities, and how they keep you informed. Trust your read on whether your child would feel safe there. With consent, Autumn ABA can coordinate with your child’s program.

Frequently asked questions

What should I look for in a preschool for my autistic child?

Look for staff experienced with or open to autism, good adult-to-child ratios, a manageable sensory environment, predictable structure, and willingness to communicate and collaborate with you and outside providers.

Should the program work with my ABA team?

Ideally yes. A program willing to coordinate with your child's ABA team (with your consent) helps strategies stay consistent across settings, which supports progress.
