Autism & Traveling: Tips for Trips & Flights

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Travel means new places, long waits, and broken routines — a big ask for an autistic child. With preparation, family trips can be smoother and even fun.

Planning ahead

Preview the trip with photos, videos, and a visual itinerary, pack comfort items and familiar snacks, and plan for sensory needs (headphones, sunglasses, a favorite device). For flights, look into airport ‘practice run’ programs and notify the airline of accommodations; for road trips, plan breaks. Bring documentation and any communication tools your child uses.

During the journey

Keep parts of the routine, build in downtime, use first-then language for transitions, and celebrate flexibility. Have a calm-down plan for overwhelm. ABA can build the waiting, transitioning, and coping skills travel demands — often practiced in advance. Related: community-based ABA.

Frequently asked questions

How can I make travel easier for my autistic child?

Preview the trip with photos and a visual itinerary, pack comfort items and snacks, plan for sensory needs, keep parts of the routine, build in downtime, and have a calm-down plan for overwhelm.

Are there airport programs for autistic travelers?

Many airports offer 'practice run' or rehearsal programs for families, and airlines can provide accommodations when notified. These can make a first flight far less stressful.
