Autism & Back to School: Easing the Transition

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

A new school year means new teachers, routines, and environments. A thoughtful start helps your autistic child return to school feeling ready and calm.

Preparing for the change

Ease back into the school sleep and morning routine a couple of weeks early, visit the school and meet the teacher if possible, use a visual schedule and social stories, and gradually rebuild stamina for the school day. Predictability is your friend after a long break.

Setting up support

Make sure IEP or 504 supports are in place and the new team understands your child, share a one-page profile of strengths and needs, and keep communication open early in the year. ABA can rebuild routine, attending, and coping skills for the transition. Related: school readiness and the IEP.
