ABA Therapy, Tics & Tourette Syndrome

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Tics and Tourette syndrome sometimes co-occur with autism. While tics themselves are managed medically, ABA can help with the related behavioral, communication, and coping skills that support a child’s day-to-day life.

Where ABA fits

Tics are involuntary and are evaluated and treated by medical specialists; behavior-therapy approaches specific to tics (such as CBIT) are typically delivered by trained clinicians. ABA’s role for a child who also has autism is broader — building communication, emotional regulation, and coping skills, and reducing the frustration and anxiety that can make hard days harder.

A respectful, coordinated approach

A BCBA coordinates with your child’s medical team and never aims to suppress involuntary tics through pressure. The focus is supportive skill-building and quality of life. ABA complements, and does not replace, medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Can ABA help a child with tics or Tourette syndrome?

When autism co-occurs, ABA can support communication, emotional regulation, and coping skills. Tics themselves are managed medically, and specialized tic-focused therapies are delivered by trained clinicians.

Will ABA try to stop my child's tics?

No. Tics are involuntary. Compassionate ABA does not pressure a child to suppress tics; it focuses on supportive skill-building and coordinates with the medical team.
