ABA Therapy for Autism and ADHD

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Many autistic children also have ADHD. When attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity overlap with autism, ABA can help by building focus, self-regulation, and routine-following in practical, everyday ways.

When autism and ADHD overlap

Autism and ADHD frequently co-occur, and the combination can make focusing, waiting, transitioning, and managing impulses especially hard. ABA doesn’t treat ADHD medically — that’s a conversation for your physician — but it directly builds the behavioral skills that help a child succeed: attending to a task, following multi-step directions, waiting, and self-monitoring.

How ABA helps day to day

A BCBA assesses where your child gets stuck and builds a plan around it: breaking tasks into manageable steps, using visual supports and reinforcement to extend attention, teaching coping and waiting skills, and reducing impulsive behaviors by teaching better alternatives. ABA works best alongside your child’s medical team. Emotional regulation and following directions are common related goals.

Frequently asked questions

Can ABA help a child who has both autism and ADHD?

Yes. ABA targets the behavioral skills affected by both — attention, impulse control, transitions, and following directions — and works alongside any medical treatment your physician recommends.

Does ABA replace ADHD medication?

No. ABA is a behavioral therapy and does not replace medical care. Decisions about medication are made with your child's physician; ABA can complement that care.

This page is general educational information, not medical advice. Every child is different — a BCBA can assess your child’s specific needs. Autumn ABA serves families in all 21 NJ counties; see where we provide ABA therapy.
