ABA, Autism & Depression in Teens

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Autistic teens experience depression at higher rates than their peers. While depression is treated by mental-health professionals, ABA can support coping, communication, and meaningful daily engagement.

Recognizing the need

Depression in autistic teens can look like withdrawal, changes in sleep or interests, irritability, or loss of skills. Depression is a serious medical condition that should be evaluated and treated by a qualified mental-health professional. If you are worried about your teen’s safety, seek help immediately (call or text 988 in the U.S.).

How ABA can support

ABA does not treat depression, but it can complement mental-health care by building communication and self-advocacy, supporting coping and routine, and increasing positive, meaningful daily engagement — all of which support wellbeing. A BCBA coordinates with the clinical team. Related: ABA for teenagers and autism & anxiety.
