ABA Therapy & Sensory Processing Differences

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Many autistic children experience the world more intensely — sounds, lights, textures, and crowds can feel overwhelming. ABA helps children build coping and communication skills around sensory needs, often alongside occupational therapy.

Respecting sensory needs

Sensory differences are real and valid. ABA doesn’t try to “train away” a child’s sensory needs — it helps them communicate those needs and build coping strategies so the world feels more manageable. That might mean teaching a child to ask for a break, request headphones, or leave an overwhelming space appropriately.

Working with occupational therapy

Occupational therapists often lead sensory-integration work, and ABA complements it by building the communication and coping skills that help a child use those strategies in real life. A BCBA can coordinate goals so the two approaches reinforce each other. Related: emotional regulation and transitions.

Frequently asked questions

Can ABA help with sensory issues?

ABA helps children communicate sensory needs and build coping strategies — like requesting a break or accommodations — and often works alongside occupational therapy, which leads sensory-integration work.

Will ABA force my child to tolerate things that overwhelm them?

No. Compassionate ABA respects sensory needs and focuses on communication and gradual, consenting coping strategies, not forcing a child to endure distress.
