ABA Therapy for Challenging Behavior

By the Autumn ABA clinical team · BCBA-led, in-home ABA across New Jersey

Aggression, self-injury, and other challenging behaviors are stressful and often frightening. ABA is one of the most effective approaches for understanding why they happen and replacing them with safer, more effective skills.

Behavior is communication

Challenging behavior almost always serves a purpose — to escape something hard, to gain attention or access, or to meet a sensory need. A BCBA conducts a functional behavior assessment (FBA) to identify that purpose. Without knowing the “why,” any intervention is a guess.

Replace, don't just suppress

The heart of effective, ethical ABA is teaching a replacement behavior that meets the same need more appropriately — for example, teaching a child to ask for a break instead of hitting. We change the environment to prevent triggers, teach skills proactively, and reinforce the new behavior. The challenging behavior fades because the child has a better option that works.

Safe, respectful, and positive

Autumn ABA uses positive, antecedent-based strategies and skill-building — not punishment. Plans prioritize your child’s dignity and safety, and progress is tracked with data so we know the plan is genuinely working.

Frequently asked questions

What is a functional behavior assessment?

An FBA is a structured process where a BCBA gathers information to determine why a behavior is happening. It guides an individualized plan that teaches replacement skills and adjusts the environment.

Does ABA use punishment to stop behaviors?

Quality modern ABA relies on positive reinforcement, teaching replacement skills, and preventing triggers — not punishment. The focus is on giving the child a better, effective way to meet their needs.

This page is general educational information, not medical advice. Every child is different — a BCBA can assess your child’s specific needs. Autumn ABA serves families in all 21 NJ counties; see where we provide ABA therapy.
