Biting — whether others or themselves — is common in young children and especially stressful when it happens often. ABA helps by finding the reason behind the biting and teaching a better way to meet that need.
Biting can be driven by frustration or a need to escape, by seeking attention or a reaction, or by sensory needs (some children bite for oral-sensory input). For young or minimally verbal children, it’s often a communication attempt. A BCBA assesses which function is at play for your child before building a plan.
ABA reduces biting by teaching replacement skills matched to the cause — communicating frustration, requesting a break, or (for sensory-driven biting) offering an appropriate oral-sensory alternative — while adjusting the environment to prevent triggers. Plans are positive and consistent. Related: sensory processing and requesting.
